Applicants to the Department of Biology at Utah State University are encouraged to submit a preapplication directly to the Department. Based on your preapplication, the Department will quickly inform you of the probability of your acceptance into our graduate program. We will also notify the faculty member(s) you designate on the preapplication and put them in contact with you. You will then be encouraged to apply officially through the School of Graduate Studies, to submit official transcripts and test scores, and to pay the $55 application fee to the School of Graduate Studies. This fee will be reimbursed to you (by the Department) if you are accepted and enroll in the Department of Biology.
Please follow these steps to submit the preapplication materials to the Department of Biology:
- You are welcome to forward an unofficial transcript from each University and/or college previously attended. Unofficial transcripts can be sent to the Staff Assistant for the Graduate Programs Committee. If you are recommended to officially apply, you will be required to submit official transcripts directly to the School of Graduate Studies.
- Your preapplication will be evaluated with self-reported, unofficial test scores. If you are recommended to apply, you will be required to submit official test scores (GRE, TOEFL) directly to the School of Graduate Studies. The GRE Institutional Code is: R4857, Dept. Code: 0203.
See below for additional information regarding application to graduate programs.
Split Form and Policy (for Current USU Undergraduates)
The split form and policy are available at the Graduate School's website. If you are a Utah State University undergraduate, you can request permission to file a Split Form in order to register for graduate courses from the Department of Biology. You must be within 30 semester credits of completing your bachelor's requirements, have filed an Application for Graduation in the Graduation Office, have a 3.0 or higher GPA, submitted GRE scores, and have applied for admission to the Department of Biology as outlined above.
Application Deadlines
The Department of Biology considers applications on a year round basis. Applications received for fall semester by 15 February will be considered for all financial awards (fellowships, scholarship, assistantships, and tuition waivers/remissions) available. Applications received after that date will be considered for the limited amount of financial awards available at the time.
Generally, students are admitted to begin their program fall term only. Special considerations may be made for students requiring spring or summer start dates.
All preapplication materials should be sent directly to the Director of Graduate Studies as follows:
Director of Graduate Studies
Department of Biology
Utah State University
5305 Old Main Hill
Logan, UT 84322-5305
Please feel free to contact the Staff Assistant for the Graduate Programs Committee if you have any questions or concerns throughout the application process. You are also encouraged to contact the faculty for more information on opportunities to pursue graduate studies in their labs.
