Room Two is reserved for faculty and student research and propagation for the teaching labs. Students use these specimens to study plant taxonomy ( Intermountain Herbarium ), plant structure, plant pathology ( Kropp lab ; Anderson lab ), and plant physiology ( Mott Lab ). Some of the undergraduate research focuses on photosynthesis, pollination, and stomatal density. Because of the variety of research and propagation needs, there is a always a lot of change in this room. And, during the cold, gloomy months of winter, Room Two looks like spring!
Biology students and visitors find the Biology greenhouse a fascinating place. It gives them an opportunity to move beyond the borders of Utah and access a diverse array of plant life.
An important teaching aspect of the greenhouse is the use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices in controlling pests. With limited spraying and introducing biological organisms to control insect populations, entomology students can study both good and bad insects and their impact on plant populations. Having an opportunity to see the good and the bad allows students to better understand the benefits and challenges of IPM practices.
