Born in Marlborough, England. Educated in England through high school. Completed a B.Sc. and teacher education certificate at the University of British Columbia. Taught high school for six years in British Columbia. Complete an M.Ed degree at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University); took a botany class. Went on to complete my Ph.D. at Washington State University. After graduation, worked as a research scientist at the Systematics Institute of Agriculture Canada for almost three years before joining the faculty at Utah State University to teach plant taxonomy and direct the herbarium. Retired in 2012 but working on digitization of natural history collections, particularly herbaria, in countries outside the US and on providing web access to diverse resources for learning about North American grasses.
